Welcome to Turpin’s world
The first book in the ‘Caribbean’ series, Caribbean High, features the fictional island of St. Peters, however, many of the locations in the story bear a close resemblance to places in St. Maarten, and people who live or have visited St. Maarten have a lot of fun pointing out the similarities. The same goes for the characters in the book. All are fictitious, yet many people in St. Maarten insist they know these characters very well. And I was actually approached by a reader at a party, who said: “That’s me, in your book, isn’t it?”
Caribbean Deep breaks away from the fictitious island of St Peters and takes the action to Puerto Rico and Bonaire, where Turpin and Jones battle an international gang of human traffickers, corrupt government officials and a mole deep within the U.S. Military. As with Caribbean High, the second book features plenty of seagoing action both above and below the water. Caribbean Deep will be available in early 2015.
About the author:
Born in Keighley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Gary attended Eastwood secondary modern school where he excelled at cross country running and earned adequate grades to obtain CSEs in History and Geography. Hating school with a passion, he never returned to pick up his diplomas and suspects they went into the dumpster when the school was demolished.
A life spent traveling, much of it under sail, brought him to the island of St. Maarten in the Dutch West Indies and a spell as assistant editor of a Caribbean sailing magazine. Later he formed his own publishing company printing weekly and by-weekly newspapers to the sailing and tourist industry. Moving into broadcasting, he produced and hosted a series of maritime shows along with a prime-time daily music/news/chat show that earned him the name ‘The Voice of the Caribbean’. Today he is the Editorial Director of All At Sea, a sailing/lifestyle magazine that is distributed throughout the islands of Caribbean, and the Associate Editor of Destination St. Maarten. He is married to Jan, his wife of 38 years. They have a boat that keeps them poor and two crazy Caribbean cats.
